Getting to Salt Spring Island & Ferry Routes
Salt Spring Island is accessible via three BC Ferries routes. The most convenient for guests is the Victoria (Swartz Bay) to Fulford Harbour route, which offers 6-8 daily sailings with a direct 35-minute crossing. The Crofton to Vesuvius Bay route provides 14 daily round-trip sailings with a 20-minute crossing, making it ideal for day trips. The Vancouver (Tsawwassen) to Long Harbour route operates 1-2 daily sailings (approximately 2h 55m to 3h 15m) with stops at other Gulf Islands. All routes are operated by BC Ferries, with online booking available at www.bcferries.com. Foot passengers should arrive 60 minutes before departure, while vehicles require 90 minutes advance arrival for check-in.
Before You Arrive
Once you arrive at your ferry terminal, Collins House is approximately 15 minutes by car from Fulford Harbour (the most convenient terminal). Detailed check-in instructions and parking information will be provided upon booking confirmation. If you're driving, note that Salt Spring Island roads are generally quiet and scenic, though some are narrow and winding—take your time and enjoy the journey. We recommend booking your ferry crossing in advance, especially during summer months and weekends, to guarantee your preferred sailing time.
When to Visit
Salt Spring Island offers distinct experiences throughout the year. Summer (June-September) brings warm weather (18-22°C / 64-72°F), vibrant farmers markets, and numerous outdoor events, though accommodation fills quickly and prices are higher. Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer pleasant weather (12-16°C / 54-61°F), fewer crowds, and beautiful natural scenery—ideal for those seeking a more peaceful retreat. Winter (November-March) is quieter and cooler (5-10°C / 41-50°F), perfect for cozy indoor stays and exploring the island's artistic community without summer tourism crowds. Each season has its charm; consider your preferences for crowds, weather, and activities when planning your visit.
Weather and What to Pack
Salt Spring Island has a mild Pacific Northwest climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. Even in summer, bring layers and a light jacket for cooler evenings and ocean breezes. Waterproof clothing is essential year-round, as rain can occur any time. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the island's trails, markets, and villages. In summer, pack sunscreen and sunglasses; in winter, bring warmer layers and consider waterproof outerwear. The ocean views from Collins House are stunning in any season, so pack accordingly to enjoy our outdoor spaces. A small daypack is useful for carrying essentials while exploring the island.
Getting Around the Island
Salt Spring Island is best explored by car, though the island is compact enough for bicycle touring and walking in the village areas. We recommend renting a vehicle for your stay to maximize your exploration of the island's attractions, hiking trails, and dining options. The main road (Lower Ganges Road) connects most services and attractions. Taxis and ride-sharing services are available but limited, so having your own transportation is more convenient. If you prefer not to drive, we can provide recommendations for local tour operators and shuttle services. Parking is generally available at most attractions, though the Saturday market can be busy during peak season.
Grocery Stores and Supplies
The village of Ganges (5-10 minutes from Collins House) has everything you need, including a full-service grocery store (Thrifty Foods), specialty shops, bakeries, and pharmacies. For self-catering guests, we recommend shopping upon arrival or the day before to ensure fresh supplies. The Saturday farmers market (year-round) offers exceptional local produce, baked goods, and artisan products—a must-visit experience. Several smaller convenience stores and specialty shops are scattered around the island. If you need specific items, we're happy to provide recommendations or directions. Most shops are open 9 am-6 pm daily, with extended hours in summer.
Dining and Food Options
Salt Spring Island punches well above its weight for dining, with farm-to-table restaurants, cafes, and casual eateries throughout the island. Ganges village has the highest concentration of restaurants, from fine dining to casual bistros. Many establishments feature local ingredients and seasonal menus. We recommend making reservations in advance, especially for dinner during summer months and weekends. For casual meals, the Saturday market offers excellent food options. Several restaurants offer takeout if you prefer dining in your suite. We can provide personalized dining recommendations based on your preferences and dietary requirements—just let us know when you book.
What to Book in Advance
During peak season (June-September), we strongly recommend booking popular activities in advance, including winery tours, guided kayaking excursions, and restaurant reservations. The Saturday farmers market and artist studio tours don't require advance booking but arrive early for the best selection. Some hiking trails and natural attractions are free and accessible anytime. Ferry tickets should be booked online to guarantee your preferred sailing time, especially on weekends. If you're interested in specific experiences (whale watching, private chef services, spa treatments), we can help arrange these before your arrival. Most activities can be booked through the island's tourism website or directly with operators.
Accessibility and Terrain
Salt Spring Island is generally accessible, though some areas have terrain considerations. Collins House itself features [describe specific accessibility features: stairs, elevator, accessible rooms, etc.]. The island's main roads and village areas are accessible by car and wheelchair. Many hiking trails vary in difficulty—some are flat and easy, while others are steep and challenging. The Saturday market and village shops are generally accessible.
